At Honigman, we value motivated and talented law students who seek a long and fulfilling career after graduation. Many of our partners, including those in senior management, grew up through our summer program. For them, Honigman has been the first and last firm where they work.

Our Work

Summer Associate Program

At Honigman, we are committed to offering our summer associates a stimulating, realistic and exciting look at the legal field.

We offer employment opportunities to law students for the summer following their second year of law school. The Summer Associate Program is designed to ensure that each summer associate obtains a meaningful "hands on" understanding of what it is like to practice law at our firm.  Summer associates participate in a variety of stimulating, intellectually challenging work assignments, observation opportunities, training, feedback sessions, social events and informal gatherings.  You will be an important part of the firm’s team, interacting with attorneys and other professionals who are open, accessible, and friendly.

We hire every 2L summer associate with the hope and expectation that he or she will become our colleague upon graduation from law school. We make decisions on associate job offers based on the totality of each summer associate's experience, including the quality of written work, evaluations from assigning attorneys, sustained academic performance and demonstrated professionalism.

Our end goal is to help you evaluate your career interests and shape your future as a well-rounded and productive lawyer. We look forward to getting to know you and we appreciate your interest in Honigman.

On-Campus Interviews

We interview second-year law students at various law schools throughout the country. Depending on our needs, we also interview third-year law students for new associate positions.

Attorney Development & Recruitment

MENTORING

While law school teaches you to think like a lawyer, it is our partners who teach you how to practice and serve clients. Some of these partners are formal mentors, others are friendly faces new attorneys get to know over time, others still provide valuable training in the context of a deal or case. Honigman highly values the people who take the time to mentor and teach. The firm has a formal mentor program whereby associates are paired with mentors for year-long terms, with certain mentors specializing in our newest associates. We also recognize the great lengths other attorneys take to ensure the success of our new colleagues.

TRAINING

Your success is the firm’s success. The Attorney Development & Recruitment team is dedicated to ensuring that our attorneys have state-of-the-art tools necessary for their professional development. Our GPS (Growth-Professionalism-Success) Core Competency Framework provides a road map for success by articulating the skills to be mastered at each level of development.

Our training programs are facilitated both by Honigman partners and by external, national subject-matter experts and are part of our concerted effort to prepare associates for direct client contact and significant responsibility on important matters from the outset of their careers. Trained mentors also work to accelerate associates' integration into the firm and provide support until they are promoted to non-percentage partner.

Each department maintains a unique training checklist that benchmarks both the substantive and business development skills necessary to be a successful attorney. Some of our recent training programs include:

  • Department-specific lunch training sessions geared toward new associates
  • Trial Advocacy
  • Advanced Transactional Drafting
  • Business Etiquette: The Rules of Engagement
  • Communicate to Influence: Oral Advocacy and Presentation Skills
  • Negotiation Skills for Transactional Attorneys
  • Negotiation Skills for Litigators
  • Making Rain YOUR Way
  • Individual Writing Coaching
  • The Honigman Business Fundamentals Institute
  • Resilience Training
  • Digital Wellness Training
  • Ross Guberman: Point Made
  • Ross Guberman: Start Off Strong Program

Honigman's Department of Attorney Development & Recruitment also offers Executive Coaching for individualized career development. Coaching equips our attorneys to build on their strengths and neutralize "blind spots" that can compromise results and hinder success.

Our Offer

When an associate joins Honigman, we anticipate a long-term relationship and our generous compensation packages start on day one. The starting salary for a first-year associate at Honigman is $205,000.  Entry-level associates typically join Honigman in September of their law school graduation year and for that partial year (September – December) will earn compensation based upon a salary of $202,500.  Associates are also eligible for consideration for a year-end bonus.

In addition to compensation, Honigman offers many benefits, including comprehensive medical coverage and dental care programs, life and disability insurance, student loan refinancing and consolidation services, open/flexible vacation policy, a 401(k) plan, and paid parking.

Honigman offers 18 weeks of paid maternity leave, and paid leave for other parents, after 12 months with the firm.  Prorated parental leave is offered during the first 12 months with the firm. The firm pays the fees for associates’ bar examination and bar review courses and pays reasonable moving expenses for attorneys joining the firm from out-of-state.

Honigman associates and non-equity partners are also eligible to participate in the firm’s WorkStyle Support Program, which provides up to $2,000 annually to be used to outfit home offices and purchase smart phones, iPads and other portable devices. The firm appreciates that the pace of business is more demanding than ever and that meeting those demands sometimes requires long hours, working from home and working on-the-go. The goal of this program is to make delivering excellent client service as easy as possible for our attorneys and to give attorneys the tools and amenities they need to work as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Honigman also provides a unique home loan program for associates and non-equity partners interested in buying or renovating a home. This interest-free home loan program underscores the unique professional and personal relationships that exist within the firm as well as the firm's commitment to long-term relationships with its attorneys. An eligible associate or non-equity partner may borrow from the firm, on an interest-free basis, the necessary down payment (up to $50,000) for the purchase or improvement of a home. Repayment of the loan begins in installments over a period of years only after the associate has become a non-equity partner in the firm. The program is well received by our attorneys and new interest-free loans are made each year.

We also provide regular feedback to associates and have a defined and comprehensive evaluation program.  This approach allows our associates to understand, on an ongoing basis, if they are meeting or exceeding expectations.  This approach also emphasizes our commitment to providing significant coaching and training (both formal and informal) that is so important to develop fully as a practicing attorney.

  • “My summer associate experience was invigorating. I worked on cases involving complex legal issues, with attorneys who made me feel like an invaluable member of the team. I participated in strategy sessions, client meetings, and site visits. The relationships I formed during my summer were instrumental in my decision to join the firm after law school, and remain a huge part of why I enjoy working at Honigman today.”

  • "When I received the phone call extending an offer to be a summer associate at Honigman LLP, I was excited – but not nearly as excited as I should have been.  I had no idea how much a few months spent as a summer associate could shape my future, and I couldn’t be happier that I accepted the offer.  My time as a summer associate was invaluable, and every moment that I continue to spend at the firm makes me a better lawyer.  That phone call literally changed my life."
