Honigman partner Sheldon P. Winkelman elected Board Chairman of the Michigan Housing Council
Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP (Honigman) is pleased to announce that Sheldon P. Winkelman, a Partner in the firm’s Real Estate Department, has been elected Chairman of the Board of the Michigan Housing Council (MHC) for a term ending in 2011. Winkelman has been a member of the MHC since its inception and was the first attorney to be elected President, a post that he held for two terms ending this year.
Winkelman has more than four decades experience working on a wide variety of commercial real estate and financing transactions with an emphasis on government-assisted housing. He has represented a broad range of clients, including developers, lenders, owners, managers, borrowers and investors. His experience also encompasses government, quasi-government, private agency and institutional housing programs.
He has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America from 1983 through 2010, in Michigan Super Lawyers from 2007 through 2009, as a DBusiness Top Lawyer in 2010 and is AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell. Along with the MHC, Winkelman’s professional involvement includes membership in the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, The National Leased Housing Association, the Institute for Responsible Housing Preservation and The Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development Law.
Winkelman is a member of both the State Bar of Michigan and the District of Columbia Bar Association. He earned a B.A. from Wayne State University and a J.D. from Wayne State University Law School.

Founded in 1989, the MHC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the financing, construction, management, and rehabilitation of affordable housing in Michigan. The Michigan Housing Council is one of the oldest statewide associations of affordable housing professionals in the United States. The MHC is comprised of owners, developers, managers, general contractors and subcontractors, architects, engineers, attorneys, financial groups, insurers, accountants, market analysts, tax credit syndicators and other consultants, non-profits and businesses involved with Michigan’s affordable housing industry.
