Working Mother Magazine and Flex-Time Lawyers names Honigman one of 50 Best Law Firms for Women
Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP (Honigman) has been named by Working Mother Magazine and Flex-Time Lawyers as one of the 50 Best Law Firms for Women in the United States. This is the second consecutive year in which Honigman is the only Michigan law firm to earn this designation. Honigman will be featured in the August/September issue of Working Mother and at www.workingmother.com and http://www.flextimelawyers.com/best.asp for its work/life and family friendly policies.
“Honigman is pleased to be recognized by Working Mother for its flexible work time and family-friendly policies, which are beneficial for both male and female attorneys in our firm,” said Chairman and CEO David Foltyn. “It is a win-win proposition for the attorney and the law firm. The attorneys are more satisfied with their role as professionals and parents, and the firm can retain these gifted lawyers, while making sure their career track is not lost when they begin their families.”
Honigman received high marks for its development and retention of women, as well as for its work time flexibility. It was also noted that Honigman’s business development, networking and mentoring programs were among the best among the firms reviewed. In addition, Honigman has a standing Committee on Women Attorney Initiatives aimed at continually improving retention, career development and business development for its female attorneys.
The magazine’s selections for Best Law Firms for Women are leading the charge for change. For example, the 50 winning firms retain more lawyers who work reduced hours (8 percent versus 5 percent nationwide). These winning firms also retain more female equity partners who share in their firms’ profits (20 percent versus 16 percent nationwide).
“We salute the 2009 Best Law Firms for recognizing that making the legal profession work for women is good business for everyone,” said Carol Evans, President, Working Mother Media.
“Big salaries and bonuses will no longer be the pivotal means for firms to draw the best talent, and culture and environment will become more important ways for firms to distinguish themselves,” said Deborah Epstein Henry, Founder and President, Flex-Time Lawyers.
Selection Methodology: The 2009 Best Law Firms for Women application was developed in a partnership between Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers. Firms with at least 50 lawyers were eligible to apply and the application included detailed questions about the issues that are most important to the retention and promotion of female lawyers. The 50 winning firms were selected based on their workforce profile, family-friendly benefits and policies, flexibility, leadership, compensation, advancement and retention of women, among other criteria utilizing 2008 data.
